My family and I spent time exploring several cities in Ecuador, then flew out to the islands for a small-ship cruise — private, intimate, nothing like a large group tour. It's genuinely one of the best trips I've ever taken, and I'd recommend it to anyone with even a passing love of the ocean or the natural world.

But somewhere in the middle of that trip, I remember thinking: I could have planned this better.
